why musicians back in the 70’s and 80’s released so much music that feels like filler now

I thought about this because I was going through some old artists like Rush, Elton John, and David Bowie and my gosh did they release so many dang albums, and most of them critically mixed and culturally irrelevant today. So I’m just wondering, why would they do this?

In the day major source of income was selling records, so releasing singles or albums was the major way to make money rather than touring or doing gigs. Then you did gigs to sell records, while some of the music seems bland today there was an awful lot less choice around then and limited outlets where you could get it.

You’re kidding, right? Most of the crap getting released today will be forgotten far sooner than the music you mentioned.

I always got the feeling it was studio obligation. It’s so easy to separate the bangers from corporate obligation.
