Why is there a difference between world records for indoor and outdoor athletics?

Thought of it first when I heard about the recent world record in pole vault by Armand Duplantis but then I realized that most athletic discipline keeps the both apart. Why is that?

For field events it’s usually because of the controlled conditions, as mentioned.

For track events, it’s because an indoor track is (usually) 200m, as opposed to 400m outdoor. I THINK to be an official indoor record the track needs to be 200m or less.

This smaller track size is slower (tighter turns and shorter straights), and also causes events to be run a little differently. For instance, outdoors the 400m is run in lanes the entire way.
Indoors the runners would run 2 turns, and then “break”, coming out of their lanes and letting everyone run in lanes 1-2.

Indoor is a controlled environment which can completely change the result between heat moisture and wind

Because they’re often different lengths. The indoor track is 200 m while the outdoor track is 400 m. So an indoor runner has to turn more often, and usually at a harder angle.
