Why is it that when I’ve pushed myself too far when exercising and get really thirsty I have to take small sips of water instead of just chugging it?

Your body is liable to go into shock. Your core temperature is suddenly dropped from the cold water, bam, shock.

On one had, breathing and drinking get in the way of each other. If you’re breathing too hard after a workout, it’s going to be hard to put that aside and drink large gulps. Also, your body generally reduces digestion when you’re exercising. So your body isn’t exactly being primed to take in more stuff. It’s more focused on using the stuff it already has
