Why is Google betting on RCS (improved SMS)

4G (and 3G) are antenna based and so is SMS. Why would anyone put effort in still using the SMS network? The elegant solution seems to me to do everything over 4G. The argument that SMS is more widespread/reliable seems like a short-term argument since 4G is being implemented worldwide (spaceX’s starlink and blueOrigin’s kuiper systems for example). Am I overestimating the effort? Is it purely a short-term based business decision? It doesn’t seem to make sense from an innovation point of view. Maybe I don’t understand communication well enough.

The short answer is that Google’s implementation of RCS, Chat, doesn’t appear to use the SMS network. According to [this](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/what-is-rcs-messaging/%3famp) article:

>Instead of using a cellular connection, Chat will rely on your data connection. It’s also hardware agnostic, meaning it will work across multiple devices. And while Chat could work on iOS, Apple has yet to announce if its phones will support the protocol.
