Water conducts electricity, so if you get an electronic device wet, it can make connections where it’s not supposed to which will at best cause the device not to work as intended and at worst may permanently damage it.

Water also causes corrosion of metal parts, which may also permanently damage the device.

Electronic devices have pathways where electrons travel. Which pathways the electrons follow is what makes them work, so if electrons follow the wrong pathways, the device may work incorrectly. If too many electrons follow certain pathways, it may even catch fire.

Water can work as a pathway for elecrons to follow, so when you spill water on an electronic device there is no telling what might happen.

Regular (non-distilled/non-ionized) water is fairly conductive. If you pour water all over a circuit that isn’t waterproof, it makes electricity go where it’s not wanted and in the direction it’s not wanted.

Water also causes corrosion of exposed metals over time. Corroded metals don’t conduct electricity well.

Water causes short circuits, meaning that electricity gets to where it’s not supposed to. All electronics rely on good electrical signals from and to the inputs of the individual chips involved, which will all be interrupted if there are short circuits. Power supplies really hate water, because it short circuits the power supply and either it overloads and shuts due to the high current or it will literally be destroyed by the heat from that high current.

they dont

the issue itself isnt the water(H2O), its the fact that youir normal tap water for instance, has al ot of salts and minerals dilluted in it, a lot of these are conductive and will cause shorts aswell as corrosion when reacting with the board itself(this is why just drying them isnt enough ot salvage water damaged electronics, these minerals get deposited all over contacts and such)

pure H2O is mostly inert for electronics
