It doesn’t… Kinda.

Running a 10 minute mile for 35 minutes will burn more calories than walking 5 minutes to warm up, running 10 on @ 10min/mi -> 5 off -> 10 on, and cooling down for 5.

What interval running DOES tend to do is allow people to jog faster and/or work out for longer periods of time versus simply jogging nonstop, which equates to more calories burned during the exercise and afterwards as the body works to recover. So you might be able to jog for an hour with 10 on 5 off versus 30 minutes nonstop, and during the course of that longer duration exercise burn more calories than a shorter more intense workout.

Apples to apples though? It doesn’t.

It does not. Another issue is that running in intervals allows you to run faster/further, which burns more calories.
