Our body uses some of the same pathways for sensing cold as it does for pain. So when our skin is cold, the sensory nerves have a heightened sensitivity to pain stimuli.

Interestingly, this might be a protective mechanism- allowing us to sense pain and detect injuries despite the numbing effect of the cold.
