Why does it burn your throat when you drink soda in the mornings?

Like when you just woke up and drink a soda or a carbonated drink and it burns, but it doesn’t happen in the afternoon or later in the day.

Why does this happen?

Well the time of day has nothing to do with it. But it burns your throat because the bubbles from carbonated drinks is carbon dioxide. So the burning sensation you’re feeling is low pH reacting with pain receptors in your throat.

That’s it. It’s probably just more jarring in the morning because you’re still waking up.

The bubbles in soda are formed from carbon dioxide gas that is mixed into the soda to give it that nice fizz. The thing is, that when carbon dioxide is compressed enough to dissolve into water, it forms carbonic acid. It is the carbonic acid that causes that slight burning or tingling sensation. Don’t be worried though, as it is very week and harmful.
