Why does it lead to water retention in the body?

Prednisone has both anti-inflammatory as well as mineralocorticoid activity.
Mineralocoritcoid activity essentially means it can stimulate the kidneys to retain sodium. Sodium retention will drag water with it because the body needs to maintain a stable electrolyte concentration (osmolality). This causes water retention.
