Why do women dangle their hands from the wrists?

Picture a woman offering a hand to be kissed. That posture, except in all sorts of other contexts. I was watching a shot of the US Women’s soccer team warm up and several of the players were running with hands in this posture. It struck me to wonder 1) why? and 2) why does this hand position seem “obviously” feminine to me, even if a man holds it?

It’s a cultural indication of femininity. Little girls see woman do it and imitate from a young age. If young boys do it it is strictly discouraged and mocked. So over the course of childhood the behavior is reinforced in females and forbidden for males.

There are many, many other gendered mannerisms and behaviors that society teaches young children to adhere to.
