Why do versions of games on other platforms usually have new/different content?

Case in point, Terraria. Why does the 3DS version have purple Hero’s Clothes instead of green? What does the 3DS have to do with it? I understand that they were probably made in different engines because the original engine couldn’t support those platforms, but why invent content?

Usually this has to do with different developers and/or publishers, they may make some changes when they port the game to another system.

Just reading the Terraria Wiki, that particular set is green on the 3DS. But it does call out the purple set as being the “Old-gen console version”. Clicking into that, it was a port developed by Engine Software and published by 505 Games based off the desktop version. In short, either 505 Games or Engine Software said “Hey, lets make this change to the original game while we port it”. As to why they did that, that would come down to business decisions made by them rather than any kind of answerable question by the general public. It could be because they wanted to possibly avoid any chance of copyright infringement, or maybe one of the developers or designers just liked purple better than green.

EDIT: Some other companies will use this as a way to offer exclusive content on their platform to incentivize people to purchase the game on that platform.
