Besides stay-at-home parents and the unemployed (who might be home watching daytime TV), I’ve of the biggest demographics watching daytime TV is college kids.

because the people who watch TV during the day are more likely to be unemployed due to either lack of education or disability. These firms know that, so they are offering the TV viewer a way to improve their situation.

Because that is when their target audience is likely to be watching and advertising at that time of the day is fairly cheap compared to peak time viewing and sports events.

Advertising airtime is bought by the minute and priced in accordance to how many people are likely to see a given ad. Prime time advertising is the most expensive, but it has the most eyeballs watching. Which makes it more appealing for national brands to shill their products. During the daytime and late at night, there typically aren’t too many people watching TV, so airtime can be bought at a discount. That’s when you’ll see the shady lawyers and as-seen-on-TV products being pushed, as they can afford to advertise during those time slots. Plus those sort of products appeal to people who do happen to be watching TV at that time.
