Why do so many people survive lightning strikes (90% survival rate in some cases)?

Lightning is taking the most conductive path to ground, and usually that isn’t through a human body. People who are directly hit usually have the energy travel down their wet skin/clothes to the ground and suffer burns. To actually kill you electricity needs to travel through your body and cause internal burns or stop your heart.
