why do people have grass for roofs?

I see this constantly in certain European counties, and mostly in villages, but still, why? Is it ascetic, or is there an actual purpose for these type of roofs?

green roofs keep ur house cool, produce oxygen, save money on shingles, reduce stormwater and its good for our health to be surrounded by nature

Are you talking about sod? Or thatched? Sod would look like a lawn on top of a roof or straw placed in layers on a roof.

Sod roofs are waterproof, heavy (which is good for a log house), reasonably good insulators, and made of materials that are free. All of those things make them a pretty good choice for rural areas in cold climates.

All materials have this property called thermal delay. And earth has a quite long thermal delay (depending on the thickness it can be up to 12 hours). Besides, earth has thermal resistance, thermal transmittance and thermal capacity that makes it a great insulator for pretty much any climate. On cold climates, it will warm up during the day and slowly deliver that heat (thermal delay) during the night. On warm climates, it will make sure that all that heat doesn’t go through the roof during the day, which would warm up the environment significantly (think fibercement roofing).
