Because for a long long time the species had to deal with feast or famine times and muscle is expensive to maintain calorie-wise. So to survive the long winters or times when food was sparse, our bodies shrink muscle and put on fat, which is essentially a calorie savings-account.

Yeah, turns out fatties can survive way longer without eating than regular people. This completely changes my zombie apocalypse novel.
