Why do old films have spots?

I’m watching The Empire Strikes Back original version, and Why does it have spots, whereas the special edition doesn’t?

Those are either damaged portions of film, which were digitally removed in later editions, or left over marks to let the film projectionist know when to change reels, which also would have been digitally removed.

It’s for the department in the filmmakers studio that splices each scene into the next. Those flashes in the upper right hand corner denote a scene change.
Fight club was wrong, it’s nothing to do with the reels at the cinema.
