Why do new silicone mats (mostly for bathmats) stink so badly?

I work a retail job and I was putting stuff on the shelves. Every time I pop open a box of silicone mats I get punched in the face by what I can only describe as very bad, skunky-smelling weed. Why are all these mats smelling like this? Should I be concerned? Should I phone the company and tell them their product is giving off a worrying smell?

I don’t believe it should be smelling skunky. It could possibly smell like fresh rubber because of the material. The only thing I could think of would be maybe a chemical coating on them to kill bacteria but I don’t think it would smell like that.

there’s a lot of gasses that come out of curing silicone, they were kept in that box for a while, so all that offgassing builds up inside.
