Why do nails start ‘curling?’

If you let your nails grow *too* long, they start curling around. If nails grow straight, why do they start curling?

Fingernails don’t really start curling, they were never straight to begin with. Look closely at your short nails, you wil probably see a slight curve.

Toenails can start curling more because your shoes push them down.

Because they don’t from perfectly straight, when their short they might as well grow perfectly straight, but over long distances they’ll start to curve. Added onto this is the extra pressure (gravity) gradually pulling on the nails and being bent against other things that probably cause some of the nail structure to deteriorate
