Why do moths go through multiple caterpillar stages, when they end up completely changing in a pupa anyways?

Pupating and undergoing metamorphosis is no easy task. Caterpillars spend their whole life stage eating to try and get as much energy as possible. The more they grow, the more energy they can spend on changing into an adult, and potentially be more successful. Bigger = more energy stored.

Also, presumably, there are other physiological changes that must happen prior to pupating.
