Why do human wipe their butts when other mammals don’t? Is it just a comfort/sanitary thing?

Lots of animals clean the anus after defication. Some even use their tongue.

Overall it’s a smell thing. In the wild, odors are tracked by predators.

Same reason for humans, most don’t like the smell.
