Why do fingernails fly off when cut, but don’t if you soak them first?

When they are wet, they are soft, and the blade doesn’t need to have a much force, and potential energy, behind it.

When they are dry, you need to use much more force and potential energy. When the nail is finally cut, all the energy has to go somewhere.
