Because it’s difficult to rest your respiratory system. The fact you are constantly breathing and frequently eating/drinking/speaking also makes the symptoms more apparent. Coughing itself also damages your throat/larynx

The lungs and throat are warm damp environments with lots of soft sensitive tissue to live, perfect place for microbes.
