Why do bus seats absorb so much dust, but office chairs/sofas don’t?

The dust that you’re seeing is also probably not absorbed, but in reality is the foam of the bus seat itself breaking down and flaking away. Bus seats get a tremendous amount of usage, and if that many butts sat on your office chair or sofa and got on and off the amount of times that people get on and off bus seats, you’d see the same kind of breakdown.

All fabric seats do. There are many more people on buses so there is more dust. If you spend lots of time on your office chair or sofa then it will also absorb dust.

when chairs/sofas filled with foam are compressed by being sit upon, the air inside the foam escapes and helps remove or at least loosen the surface dust so it more easily escapes into the air or is trensfered to the person. An un-padded but fabric covered seat wouldn’t have that air flow.
