Why do animals with one eye have fur over the place with one eye?

I see these photos of animals that lost an eye had to have one removed, and there’s skin and fur the space. Why does this occur?

This is more typically in animals that had surgery to remove the eye, or had surgery to repair the eye socket after the animal lost its eye.

And the answer is to prevent infection. When you lose your eye, you essentially have a big gaping hole in your head that can let dirt, debris, bacteria, and other nasty things into your head.

They end up using the eyelid remaining and surrounding skin to close up that hole to prevent stuff from getting into where the eye used to be.
