Presidents have immunity from prosecution unless they are impeached by both houses of Congress.

Supremacy clause gives the federal government the final say.

A sitting President can’t be indicted because it would impose a significant burden on their ability to discharge the duties of their office.

They can. The Constitution provides no protection from state-level prosecution to the President.

You might be thinking of Congressmembers.

Wouldn’t be very practical, roughly half the states you can expect to not like the sitting President at the state level, so any president from any party at any time would constantly be indicted
