Why can you sometimes not fall asleep despite feeling exhausted?

Why does this happen? You’re dead tired. Nothing stressful in particular is on your mind. But you still haven’t fallen asleep. You try counting sheep, listening to white noise etc. Maybe you manage to reach some relaxed drowsy stage, only to somehow became fully alert again. What could possibly be keeping you awake; why does your body seem to be fighting the most obvious course of action: rest???

I’ve experienced monthly insomnia my whole adult life that I’m somewhat convinced is tied to the moon’s cycles. Last night I was exhausted when I got home at 8pm, yet didn’t get to bed til past 12, and still experienced pretty well what OP describes… how or what the moon is doing to me I don’t know, but that’s the way I see it. Like when you feel restless and so go out on a weeknight, like I used to do as a younger man, only to find your favorite bar rocking at 11 pm on a Tuesday, for no special reason… the insomniac lunatics gather again…

That’s hard to answer without having context. It can be due to a number of factors,

– Stimulant intake (caffeine)
– Light / time of day and circadian rhythm
– Running things over in your head, not allowing yourself to get on paper what tomorrow:s tasks are
– Overstimulation from what you’ve been doing
– Eating before sleep

Try the 4-7-8 breathing pattern.
