why can we not get over cringey moments and harp on them?

Is there some kind of biological explanation for why if I accidentally text/email something to the wrong person that I literally remember it for weeks and even years later sometimes look back on it and feel the same level of awkwardness I did initially?

Super embarrassing moments are a little chemical stain in our brains, and sometimes your thoughts bounce into it.

It’s a survival mechanism. Our more animalistic brain used anxiety to help us if we were in danger and to particularly remember those instances. In the modern world something embarrassing also causes anxiety and leaves an imprint on the brain. It’s no longer really needed for survival but unfortunately the (animalistic) brain doesn’t know the difference and we remember cringy/anxiety moments more.
