“Properly” is the enough adverb here. “Differently” would be more accurate.

Your vocal cords/folds are evolved to work best when air is flowing past them *OUT* of your body, but they still work when air is flowing *IN*.

I guess the same reason you can’t run as fast backwards as forwards… Or play a violin well upside down.
