For the same reason a baboon, gorilla, or a bonobo are also different species from us. They are genetically a different species that shares traits.

Race means identical except for a few superficial differences that are, literally, skin deep. As opposed to genetically.

Because they were indeed a different species. Interbreeding with them was difficult. Only male modern humans could breed with female neanderthals, and such interbreeding may have caused diseases like Lupus and Crohn’s disease.

They used to be considered a separate species. But now that we know homo sapiens have neanderthal inter mixing, and obviously produced viable offspring,. They’re more like a subspecies.
