The most popular theory is that insects use natural light sources like the Sun, stars, and moon as guides for orientation. Towards light is up, away from light is down. Flying insects “want” to be away from the ground, to avoid ground-based predators, so they move towards the light, a phenomenon known as positive phototaxis.
