Often it comes from snow.

Snow falls and accumulates on mountain peaks due to the increased elevation.

Some snow melts and becomes runoff.

This can pool into rivers which obviously run downhill.

At some points these will reach a cliff edge, and going over become a waterfall.

stream gets bigger as it collects more rain and connects with other streams

It comes from rain.

The rain comes from water vapour, which comes from lakes and oceans. That water comes from rivers, which comes from higher up in the mountain. That water comes from rain.

The catchment area for a waterfall covers everything upsteam and uphill of it. Water takes a long tike to percolate through the ground, and into a watercourse upstream of the waterfall.

Think of it like a traffic jam on a motorway. They’ve all come from their individual houses, to converge into one place at the same time
