What kind of techniques are best for counting the number of protestors in Hong Kong? Or any crowd for that matter?

Divede into squares or even cubes in case you are trying to estimate the number of things in a box. Then it should be a lot simpler to count the smaller area/volume and multiply it to get the total.

If its a march you time how long it takes for the whole march to pass and then take a section in about 20 metres long and time it from first to last person. and then count all the people in that section. And then will have an idea of how many similar sized sections were in the march and you multiply that by the number in the counted section.

Atleast that is the easiest way to do it. If you want more accuracy, you will need a snapshot of everyone and then meticulously count them all.

Draw an imaginary square and count how many people fit inside, then count how many squares are in the crowd and you a pretty good guess
