It’s caused by inflammation of the throat tissue. The technical term for a common cold is “nasopharyngitis,” meaning inflammation of the nose and pharynx (throat.) The cold virus invades the sensitive tissues and the tissues react by producing compounds called “inflammatory mediators,” such as histamine. While the mediators aren’t required to get rid of the cold, their presence causes most of the uncomfortable symptoms of a cold.
