Coal is a type of fossil from degenerated organisms. It has not burned and retains a lot of its original energy.
Ash happens when the reactive parts of something flammable are gone and only the non-reactive parts are left.
The reason coal and ash seem similar is because they’re both carbon-based, and partially because of coincidence.
