What in our brains gives us the ability to think?

It’s impossible to know for sure but some theories say apes that started eating meat had inflammation and that swollen brain led to more brain function from electrical signals firing off to different parts of the cortex. That was the slippery slope to new diet and thoughts which lead to humanoids

No one knows, how seemingly simple things like switches or neurons or ants or bees can come together in a structure and create such wonderful and elegant constructs like computers, brains, ant colonies, or beehives. The phenomenon is called [emergence](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16W7c0mb-rE) though. It is very interesting how simple logic and some patterns can create such complex structures.

No one here will have a good answer, as this is the unsolved [Hard Problem of Consciousness](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_problem_of_consciousness)

I like breaking things down to their most simple elements and I apologize in advance for going on at length. My only wish is to clearly express what I believe. It is a huge subject and the subject of much debate. I can only supply my thoughts.

This is a question that hasn’t been answered to my satisfaction. But from what I understand, none of the individual parts are directly responsible for consciousness. To be very brief, there are experts that’ll be able to tell you which part controls which function of your body, but they can’t tell you where that happens. They may not be able to have the answer, though. It may prove to be impossible. Why do I think this, you didn’t ask? Because I think the answer isn’t there.

I believe Thought, and therefore my Mind, is on another level and must exist Outside me. Hear me out, I know it sounds crazy. This means that looking for a 3d solution is not going to succeed. We can apply Logic, which lies in the realm of Thought, and is a measure of Thought, like all good tools would be. And Logic is all about Symbols.

The Symbology to use is Number. In Number, we need to assign each Number a Name Symbol to represent the subject and agree on what they mean, and therefore their consequences.

Using the Symbols, I will define our path to the realm of Thought up to the Number 4, because that is where the Mind exists. Please note that this is not my knowledge, it is only my understanding of it. In history, many societies practiced it. You’ve likely heard of some.

Number 1 means ‘The Collection of All, Infinite, or Singular (meaning ‘that which contains All Things’)’. All things spring from this and each part of All into Infinite parts is Singular.’ I like this thought. There must be a container that exists to hold All things. The Universe, in the act of perceiving itself (through You, and all living things), splits into a subject and an observer.

Number 2 and 3, which cannot exist without each other, are Duality and Principle. Principle naturally springs from and is created instantaneously when 2 is born. To make a metaphor, it is like hot or cold, but Temperature is the Number 3, it’s Principle, which is Dual in nature.

Your Mind isn’t made of only Principles though and the Mind must exist in something, therefore Number 4 is the framework in which the Mind inhabits and that becomes named the Physical World, or Reality, or that which contains all Your Principles.

Therefore the key to understanding Your Mind (which is really what your question is about), You must decide who You are. What are the values, or Principles that make You?

Number goes way beyond what I’ve said and is a truly interesting subject, but I’m only a self proclaimed student, hardly a master and I’ve gone on quite long enough.

Math makes sense but in cases where there are more than one answer nobody knows.

For example (adding on to your question):

Who gives us our morals?

Do animals have morals?

Are we the only species that ask others for help?

Are we the only ones with an imagination?

(Feel free to reply with more questions to add on to this)
