What happens when we are asleep? Was does laying in bed not have the same effect as actually sleeping?

When you lay down on a bed and do nothing, not much is different. But when you actually begin to “sleep”, your body starts recharging for the next day, why is that?

There are many psychological theories why this is but there is no objective reason. Some people think it’s to restore our brains overnight while others believe that it is to develop our brain and process our memories. More info here

No one actually knows why we need sleep. There have been lots of theories, but we just don’t know. What we do know is that while we sleep, brain activity is still present. You will go through different stages of sleep, this article explains all four: https://www.tuck.com/stages/
