you send the current the wrong way.

For some devices such as an old lightbulb it won’t make much if any difference. For LED’s you will blow them and circuit boards or computerchips can be damaged by the current going the wrong way.

As pointed out by other users a motor will simply reverse direction. If you turn it using outside force then it becomes a generator
