Mated queens hibernate during the winter while the rest of the colony dies. Those that manage to survive to spring build a nest, lay their eggs, and start a new colony.

Depending on your local species; look for little golf ball sized mini nests which the new queens live in over winter. Often found under the eaves and in attics.
