What does a Machine Learning software engineer do?

Many things can be automated. Things that can be automated can often be improved and optimized for more efficient operation. In the past, much of of that optimization was done by humans, using limited streams of data.
Machine learning is intended to automate the data collection, while allowing the system that’s being controlled to optimize itself.
Machine learning software engineers would be writing code to make all of that happen.
Mostly they turn electricity into heat. They collect huge heaps of data, and feed that data into ML software to train that software to do some task. Then they test it to see if it’s doing a good job. It’s not, so they go and get some more data until the software is good enough to suggest what song you would like.
