The border between Norway and Russia is defined by 2 rivers that streches 3/4 of the aprox 200 kilometer long border. The agreement is that the border is always the deepest part of the river no matter how it changes and there is a 200meter “No build Zone” at both side of the river and the Norwegian side has a chainlink fence just outside this 200meter zone. The rivers are remote and this is not a problem for Norway or Russia as it is only marsh, wetlands and hills. There is only one border crossing road and toll station with a bridge over the river. The majority of traffic is Russians driving over to buy western convenience store products (especially baby diapers) and fuel without twigs in it.

Most commonly, the borders are defined to be the course of the river at the time of definition. If the river changes course in the future, the border stays put and no longer follows the path of the river in that location.
