I remember learning in psychology that hunger is regulated by the hypothalamus region of the brain. If I had to give you an educated guess, part of the calories you’re consuming go to your developing baby. Therefore, you’re not getting enough calories for yourself triggering your hypothalamus to crave more food.

No-one is really sure. There are theories that it is related to the body lacking some nutrient or other due to the body needing more sustenance now the female body is “eating for two”, and the brain simply misinterprets the need for the nutrient as a sudden craving for a very specific flavour. Scientists haven’t worked it out for sure yet though.
