In the Roman calendar, the Kalends was the first day of the month. The Ides occured on the 15th day in March, May, July, and October, and the 13th in other months. If you wanted to refer to the 6th of June, you’d say it was the “eighth day before the Ides”.

Edit because the Romans counted inclusively.

Ides =middle of the month (usually the 13th; 15th for some months). Kalends = first day of the month.
