spike-triggered average (reverse correlation)?

I can easily understand normal correlation, but I am having difficulty understanding reverse. Or also called spike-triggered average in the wikipedia-article. Could someone explain this to me like i’m 5, please?

It’s trying to answer the question, “Why did this neuron fire?” So it looks at all the times the neuron fired and grabs the input to the neuron just before it fired. Then it averages those inputs. Hopefully, the random noise that has nothing to do with the neuron firing will be averaged out, and the actual cause will be strengthened, making it clear what’s causing the neuron to fire.

It’s called reverse correlation because it’s attempting to go backwards from effect (the spike) to cause (a certain type of input).
