Micro: When your manager tells you to stop slacking off because it makes the store look bad.

Macro: When your manager’s boss makes you feel better because they’re afraid you’ll unionize against the company.

A micro environment is an environment which has a direct impact on your business (how your company operates). They typically tend to influence daily operations/performance and don’t have long-lasting impacts. These would include: suppliers, competitors, shareholders, etc.

A macro environment is more generalised and is based on the environment of the economy. It affects strategy, decision-making, and how groups tend to operate. It’s much more dynamic and includes things the company cannot control. These would include: political, legal, social and cultural forces.

Micro is individual business… how much it makes, how much it costs business to operate, and thus how much it earns or loses. Macro is economy as a whole… how does the economy affect industry and market for a company’s goods or services.
