Is it okay to touch cigarette butts with hand?

I am a non smoker so I know smoking is bad but I want to make the street clean. I try to pick up cigarette butts if I see them but is it okay to touch them with bare hands?

Get a grabby claw. Bad idea to pick up cigarette butts with bare hands because they were partly in someone’s mouth. Also a grabby claw makes it easier on the back.

I’m not sure about what you’re asking.
If you’re worried that cigarette butts will harm you if you come in contact with them, that’s not true. You’ll be fine

Your fingers will stink. There are oils/whatever that stain the skin and thus result in the smell of… butt.

It’s OK to touch your own cigarette butts, definitely not OK to touch someone else’s. You don’t know who smoked them and what infectious diseases they had.

Unless you’re immediately shoving your hand in your mouth or the cigarette butt. You’ll be fine.

I think that your heart is definitely in the right place, cigarette butts are a huge contributor in pollution.

That being said please protect yourself with some sturdy gloves (non-plastic of course)

You should wear gloves to protect yourself from Hepatitis, Herpes, HPV, and numerous other STD and diseases. Yes, you can catch both viral and bacterial diseases from cigarette butts.

You might want to think of it like this.

Human mouth is filled with bacteria > Butt of cigarette goes into mouth of stranger > Stranger throws cigarette on the ground which also has bacteria > You pick it up with your bare skin > You do something with your hands like touch your face, etc.

I’m normally not a stickler for bacteria because I think it’s healthy to build up your immune system, but the Coronavirus is in my city so all I see is people in masks at the moment.

You are touching something that has been in someone’s mouth, and on the ground. It is likely that there are nasty germs on it.

Like any germs, if you wash your hands thoroughly before touching anything else (like your face, phone, keys, etc, you should be fine.
