Igniting a diesel engine

I noticed on a Mercedes diesel engine that the engine timing was 14 degrees BTDC. Since a diesel ignites on compression instead of a spark, how is this timing arrived at and what actually happens?

The timing on a modern diesel engine is the point when the injector starts injecting fuel. They inject high pressure diesel directly into the cylinder near the top of the compression stroke, when it instantly ignites.

In your case, this gives 14° of rotation for the fuel to really get burning, which sounds about right.
