The eye works like a lens to focus the light it receives perfectly on to the retina (or not which is why people need glasses and contacts). If the whole inside of the eye ball was lit up it wouldn’t do its job very well.

Much like trying to watch a presentation with all the lights on in the room. It does the job just not as well as it could.

Tl;dr The inside of the eyeball has to be dark so the eye can do its job. You *can* see into it there’s just not much to see.

You can see into it. That’s exactly what an ophthalmologist does when they have you stick your chin on the pad and shine that blinding light into your eyes
