All batteries lose charge even when they haven’t been used. There’s no such thing as a perfect insulator. The electricity flows through the internal components of the battery. It even flows through the air from one terminal of the battery to the other.

Batteries have an internal resistance. The lithium chemistry has a much higher internal resistance than the Nicad, nimh and lead chemistry this leads to to the batteries being usable after some months since last charged. The internal resistance creates a parasitic draw which is slowly discharging the energy across the actual battery cell itself !
