How exactly does a dust bath keep chinchillas clean?

I know it has something to do with the thickness of their fur, but what exactly is it? And wouldn’t the dust get on them? What constitutes a clean vs. dirty chinchilla?

i have a chinchilla! it keeps their thick fur and skin from getting oil build up. nothing will stick inside their fur if they are nice and dry.

my husband even made a song about it! in the tune of Fireflies by Owl City:

🎶this song’s for oliver
your covered in real dense fur
we can’t give you a bath
cuz you’ll grow mold🎶 🐭

hope this clears it up!

Red chinchompas are clean and do more damage when they explode. The grey chins are the non-clean ones, you don’t want to get your hands dirty with those. They both work in the desert, and don’t suffer damage over time effects from the heat, and thus will always stay in your inventory, unless you die in which case they will escape and you will have to go back to your bank and get more box traps.
