How exactly are stromatolites formed?

Stromatolites are essentially just a rock of stuff that is non biodegradable. Cyanobacteria being one of the major causes of this. They produce calcium carbonate which is a mineral and the built up of it causes fossilization. Since the Cyanobacteria are in such close proximity to each other, all the minerals stick together and make this rock-like structure.
